Briscoe Field will not go private

Briscoe Field will not go private

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The Gwinnett County Commission has unanimously voted against privatizing Briscoe Field.

Proponents of privatization had wanted the commission to postpone Tuesday's vote since they were short on support. Former Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, a big backer, stepped down last week after pleading guilty in federal court to accepting bribes.

Opponents of privatization didn't want any delays. They had long expressed concerns over more noise at the airport if regularly-scheduled jet passenger service began.

Turns out Lasseter's vote wouldn't have mattered since all the commissioners voted against privatization.

Gwinnett leaders to meet with airport consultants

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Gwinnett County commissioners will soon meet publicly with consultants to consider future plans for an airport in Lawrenceville, an issue which has been controversial in recent months.

Commissioners are scheduled to meet Tuesday with IMG, a firm chosen because of its expertise in airport operations to help guide the privatization considerations.

Officials have said that privatization could mean keeping Lawrenceville's Briscoe Field a general aviation airport full of flight schools and small aircraft, or it could open the airport to commercial jets.

Some residents oppose the idea of turning the site into a commercial airport and have expressed concerns about increased traffic and other issues.

Toll lanes less than a month away

Toll lanes less than a month away

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- It won't be long before Gwinnett and DeKalb County drivers will have a choice: to putter in rush hour traffic, or pay for a faster commute.

We now know when the express lanes are going to open up on I-85, between Chamblee Tucker Road and Peachtree Road. Depending on construction and weather, the state will begin charging tolls on Sept. 24 or Oct. 1.

To use that 15 mile stretch of roadway, most drivers will need a Peach Pass.

"We want to give people the earliest time that it could open so that they can register and go ahead and get a Peach Pass," said State Road and Tollway spokesperson Malika Wilkins.

That means you may have less than a month to get your Peach Pass so the SRTA can figure out how much to charge you for using the lanes. They think everyone should get one.
