Norcross, GA--  The first of its kind the 2011 Word on Da Street Literary Festival will make its home in Atlanta March 12th. In celebrating the opening of Word on Da Street Book Store this event will jump start a new movement of recognizing our African American writers and readers.  With vendors, music, music performances from artist across the nation, and raffles there will be something for everyone.

ATLANTA — (ARC) Through the annual CREATE Community Local Government Awards program, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) will recognize five local governments for their innovation and efforts to make the Atlanta region a better place.

The CREATE awards recognize several areas of achievement: Community Involvement & Collaboration (Fayette County), Regional Prosperity & Economic Development (City of Stone Mountain), Environmental Sustainability (Gwinnett County), Application & Innovation in Technology (Fulton County) and Educational Excellence (City of Decatur).

Polar Plunge at Lake Lanier to Raise Money for Special Olympics

Lake Lanier, GA--  The second annual Polar plunge event will be at the island’s Beach and Water Park in Buford. More than 250 plungers have registered from various agencies and businesses across metro Atlanta.  The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department is one of the many police departments that will be participating in Saturday’s Polar Plunge at Lake Lanier to help raise money for Special Olympics Georgia.

The Polar Plunge is at 2 p.m. and the gates open at 11 a.m. There will be food, music, costume contests, a bounce house, dunking booths and Special Olympics athlete appearances. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics. Lake Lanier is waiving the gate fee for everyone attending the event.
