BAPS Charities Goes Green for Earth Day

BAPS Charities Goes Green for Earth Day

Lilburn, GA --  This year BAPS Charities will join the “A Billion Acts of Green®” campaign by reducing carbon emissions, supporting sustainability, and helping register one billion actions in advance of the Earth Summit in Rio in 2012.

BAPS Charities in Atlanta observed Earth Day by installing 3,186 plants and 10 trees of various types. Volunteers of all ages, contributed many hours throughout the morning and afternoon. Additionally, hundreds of aluminum cans were collected in a recycling drive.

In an effort to go beyond the 24-hours dedicated to Earth Day, BAPS community centers are continuously finding new ways to creatively harness cutting edge environmental designs and materials in their activities.

CUMMING, Ga. – The ALS Run for Life 5K to end Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease will be held at The Avenue Forsyth in Georgia.

The run was founded to honor Jon Blais, the only person with ALS to finish the Ironman triathlon. Every year, the event is held in to raise money for research for a cure. The race has raised over $50,000 in four years and, according to race organizers, has become a favorite among Metro Atlanta runners.

Every day in the US, about 15 people are diagnosed with ALS and life expectancy is about two to five years from the original diagnosis. ALS cripples physical functions, like the ability to move, speak and swallow; however, the mind stays sharp.

The race will be held on Saturday, May 7 at 7:00 a.m. This event will feature a one mile fun run starting at 9:00 a.m. Runners will begin the 3.1 mile course by circling the perimeter of The Avenue and them will finish in the front of the race expo.

LOCAL PROFILE: Bryant Gantt continues to make mark on UGA Athletics

LOCAL PROFILE: Bryant Gantt continues to make mark on UGA Athletics

NORTHEAST METRO – The University of Georgia’s football office is home to prominent figures, great history and much heart. Along with all of those things and a number of tireless staff members, it’s also home to former UGA football standout Bryant Gantt and his, almost innate, dedication to the community of UGA football and Athens.

Gantt, now a program coordinator and recruiting assistant at the school is one of the instrumental forces behind the team’s new mentorship program. Early last year, along with Gantt, Coach Van Halenger, Director of Athletics Greg McGarity and the Associate Athletic Director Carla Williams came together to create a program that paired current UGA football players with leaders in the Athens community for a “different type” of mentorship program. They aimed to connect the players with the Athens community.
