Non-Profit Partnership Series to Return in 2013

Gwinnett Braves to continue helping local organizations raise awareness, funds for their causes

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – The Gwinnett Braves announced plans Tuesday to continue their Non-Profit Partnership Series for the 2013 season. Introduced in 2012, the series is an all-inclusive program that allows multiple organizations who volunteer for a common cause to rally together on themed nights that correspond with the Gwinnett Braves Grant Program. The goal is to help local organizations raise awareness and funds for their causes all season long.

ATLANTA -- The winners of the 2013 AJC Peachtree Road Race lottery were chosen Monday morning.

If you weren't picked, don't despair. There are still plenty of local 10Ks, half marathons and other ways to challenge yourself between now and Independence Day.

Here are a few of the upcoming races in metro Atlanta. All of them have options that are longer than a 5K (or 3.1 miles); all start times and costs listed are for the longer races.

Gwinnett Braves to Host High School Showcase

Ten area powerhouses set to battle in five weekend games at Coolray Field

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves open the International League season on April 4, but fans don’t have to wait that long to catch great baseball action at Coolray Field. On March 8 and 9, the home of the G-Braves will host ten of the top high school baseball teams in Gwinnett County for a first-ever showcase event. The games will mark the first played at Coolray Field in 2013, its fifth season of existence.

Coolray Field has opened its doors to many high school games in the past, however, this two-day event is an expanded showcase packed with powerhouse teams and players. Six of the ten teams featured on the bill made the playoffs last season, while two of those six made it to their respective state finals game.

Renovation approved for Bogan Aquatic Center

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- A major renovation of the Bogan Park Aquatic Center was approved by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday.

A Gwinnett County official said the 15-year-old park will get new roof panels, new HVAC and filtration systems, and locker room improvements which will boost operational and energy efficiencies.

Along with two indoor swimming pools, a competition pool and a family leisure pool, the center also includes opportunities for swimming lessons, areas to swim laps, a water playground, lazy river and water slide.

As Gwinnett County reported, funds for the renovation work come from a 2005 SPLOST program. Bryson Construction Inc. received $3.15 million to use towards plans for the facility. The work will begin when the center closes in February, and is expected to be completed in September.

Swimming class to host tribute to veterans

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The young synchronized swimmers at Collins Hill Park Aquatic Center are getting ready to host their fourth annual performance for veterans and military families.

The patriotic show will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

The synchronized swimming group is made up of girls ages 8-14 who love to swim and are interested in honing their water skills in a creative way. Their Nov. 3 show is free and will be followed by a short reception.
