911 calls released in fatal Gwinnett Co. shooting


LILBURN, Ga. -- Gwinnett County police have identified a man shot to death in a Lilburn area apartment complex.

Police said 43-year-old Vernie Borroughs was already dead on the scene when police arrived at Indian Trail Apartments at 1100 Indian Trail Lilburn Road.

Borroughs, who lived at the apartment complex, was found dead in the parking lot in front of building 13 where police believe he lived.

Police don’t know how many times he was shot but did receive calls from the area around the same time reporting about six shots being fired. 

 

Gwinnett Fire responds to crawlspace fire in Lilburn


LILBURN, Ga. -- Fire officials said a family escaped safely after a house fire in Lilburn, Ga., Saturday night.

The fire happened around 8:45 p.m. in the 4800 block of Arcado Road.

Gwinnett fire officials said the fire appeared to be contained to a crawlspace in the house and was soon extinguished by firefighters on the scene.

A spokesperson said the occupants were cooking at the time the fire erupted and were alerted by the smell of smoke. 

They made it out safely but firefighters had to pull out much of the sheet rock and flooring material in the kitchen to check for spreading fire and to gain access to the area in question.

Fire personnel believe the fire started due to an electrical glitch.

Man followed home from ATM, robbed


 

LILBURN, Ga. -- Gwinnett County Police are searching for two men who followed a victim home from a Bank of America ATM.

The man told police he believes he was followed home to his apartment at the Trail Apartments on Trail Lulburn Road on Decemeber 16 after getting money out of a Bank of America ATM. 

Missing teen's body found in Yellow River


GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office confirms the body found by a kayaker in the Yellow River on Saturday is that of a missing teenage boy.

On Nov. 19, friends of 14-year-old Jaheem McGhee said he fell into the river while trying to cross. They did not notify police until a day later.

Arsonist to blame for apartment fires


LILBURN, Ga. -- Gwinnett County Fire Investigators are looking to determine who is responsible for setting three fires at Brentwood Bowns Apartments in the 500 block of Pleasant Hill Road.

On Sunday Dec. 6, at around 8 p.m., a 911 caller passing by noticed the apartment complex clubhouse was on fire. Crews arrived to find small fires.

"Upon further examination of the scene, firefighters determined that two additional fires had also been intentionally set in close proximity," said Gwinnett Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge.

The second fire caused minor damage to another exterior door of the building. The third fire was set in a bed of pine needles and shrubs near the pool area and caused minor scorching of vegetation. Fire Investigators believe the same individual is responsible for setting the three fires within the same time period.

LILBURN, Ga. -- Gwinnett County police are investigating after a body was pulled from the Yellow River Saturday afternoon.

Police: 8-year-old girl found after being reported missing


LILBURN, Ga. -- Police say an 8-year-old girl has been found after being reported missing.

According to Gwinnett County Police, neighborhood children said Alida Hightower exited a school bus around 3:40 p.m. and began walking home. Her grandmother reported her missing around 5 p.m. 

The child was later found with a family friend, police said. 

Police: Dad stabs son to death in church parking lot


LILBURN, Ga. -- Police say a man killed his 12-year-old son and then cut himself repeatedly before calling 911.

Police responded to First Baptist Church on Main Street in Lilburn around 9:15 p.m. on Monday and discovered the grisly scene. The father and son were found in a white pickup truck in the parking lot of the church. Responding officers said they both had "obvious trauma."

Firefighters work to extinguish Lilburn house fire


LILBURN, Ga. -- Fire crews with the Gwinnett County Fire Department are working to take down a blaze in Lilburn.

The fire was reported around 4:37 p.m. Sunday in the 3700 block of Hollow Tree Lane spokesperson Tommy Rutledge said.

Upon arriving, firefighters found heavy fire from the rear of the home.

The crews are working to knock-down the bulk of the flames at this time.  There's currently no word on the cause of the fire.

The homeowner gave responders the all-clear and said that were no injuries in the fire at this time.

Dog killed in Gwinnett County house fire


LILBURN, Ga. -- A dog was the lone casualty in a Lilburn house fire that engulfed a home Sunday afternoon.

Gwinnett fire officials first got the call of a blaze in the 900 block of Medina Drive around 5 p.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a two-story split level home heavily burned on the back side with flames coming through the roof.

Crews worked quickly to keep the fire from spreading further and made entry through the front door where they were met with heavy flames in the upstairs kitchen area.

Crews simultaneously began searching for victims and while no one was home at the time a dog was found dead.

The fire caused major damage to the residence and while the fire is thought to have began in the kitchen area next to some cooking appliances, the exact cause is unknown.
