Dog killed in Gwinnett County house fire

LILBURN, Ga. -- A dog was the lone casualty in a Lilburn house fire that engulfed a home Sunday afternoon.

Gwinnett fire officials first got the call of a blaze in the 900 block of Medina Drive around 5 p.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a two-story split level home heavily burned on the back side with flames coming through the roof.

Crews worked quickly to keep the fire from spreading further and made entry through the front door where they were met with heavy flames in the upstairs kitchen area.

Crews simultaneously began searching for victims and while no one was home at the time a dog was found dead.

The fire caused major damage to the residence and while the fire is thought to have began in the kitchen area next to some cooking appliances, the exact cause is unknown.
