Fulton County maintains ranking in health study

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The newly released 2013 County Health Rankings for Georgia confirm the critical role that factors such as education, jobs, income, environment and access to health care play in how healthy people are and how long they live. Once again, the Rankings place Fulton County in the top quarter of Georgia counties on health outcomes and health factors according to the report released by the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Project.

“We know that much of what influences our health happens outside of the doctor’s office – in our schools, workplaces and neighborhoods,” states Patrice A. Harris, MD, Director of Fulton County Health Services. “We have to keep looking at the multiple factors that contribute to good health and ensure that our communities are positioned to address those factors.”

Safe Kids Fulton County celebrates 20 years

ATLANTA -- Area residents are invited to join the Safe Kids Fulton County Coalition to celebrate 20 years of service to help keep kids safe.

The special event is scheduled for Thursday, March 29 from 10:00 am -12:00 pm at The Villages at Carver Family YMCA located at 1600 Pryor Street, SE. They will recognize current members and partners dedicated to saving kids’ lives by developing and conducting programs that reduce or eliminate preventable, unintentional injuries and deaths.

The coalition targets the four most common areas of unintentional injuries through education and awareness:

Traffic Injuries (passenger, pedestrian, bicycle)
Fires and Burns
Drowning and near drowning
Poison Prevention

Fulton County Health Services encourages women and girls to take action to protect against HIV/AIDS

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a day to "Share Knowledge. Take Action.". The nationwide observance held each March 10th sheds light on the disease's often overlooked impact on women and girls and empowers people to make a difference. Fulton County Health Services provide education, testing and counseling to battle this serious public health issue.

On Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 12:30 p.m. - 3:30p.m. Health Services will provide HIV Testing and sponsor a Workshop/Presentation at the Clark Atlanta University (CAU) Teen Summit that will be held in the Carl and Mary Ware Academic Building on the CAU campus. The Summit is sponsored by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women of Atlanta.

The Georgia Pest Control Association supports Leukemia & Lymphoma Society event

Ted Veitch, President of the Norcross-based Georgia Pest Control Association (GPCA) announced the tenth annual participation of the organization with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walks. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) relies heavily on funds raised through the GPCA. Since 2004, member companies of the GPCA have raised $876,000 to help fight blood cancers. Their goal is to reach the $1 million mark this year to celebrate their decade of participation with the Light The Night Walks.

“The Georgia Pest Control Association is proud to partner with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through the Light The Night Walk,” said Ted Veitch, the GPCA President. “Light The Night provides a way for our association to work together to raise funds for cancer research and allows us to give back in the communities we serve. I’m excited to announce we raised over $77,000 for LLS in 2012 throughout Georgia.”

ATLANTA -- Eight year old Ava Bullard is playing with her sisters, riding their bikes on their long country driveway. It is a simple act that defies those who said she would never talk, those who said she wouldn't function in the real world.

Ava was not a typical baby, or toddler.

Her mother Anna says, "You couldn't interact with her."

Ava did not play with toys. Did not speak. Could not dress herself. Did not interact with her parents or sisters. Slept two hours a night. She was in her own world.

Anna says, "It's like she looked straight through me. She would just...it's like you weren't there, if you were in the room with her."

Anna Bullard took Ava from doctor to doctor for months. One doctor told the family Ava was 'just weird.'

Atlanta recruiting 5,000 volunteers for cancer study

ATLANTA -- Sixty years ago, 1 million men and women signed up for the first-ever Cancer Prevention Study. They filled out surveys every few years. And the information from those million Americans led to a dramatic discovery.

Doctor Alpa Patel with the American Cancer Society is the lead researcher on CPS3, the third generation of the cancer prevention studies.

"The first study was actually set up to specifically address the question of whether not smoking caused lung cancer, and it provided the first evidence that in fact smoking is what was the causal fact, causal factor with the increase rise in lung cancer death rates we were seeing in men at that time," she said.
