Stone Mountain Park (SMP) invites guests to enjoy its popular holiday attraction, Stone Mountain Christmas on select dates from November 13 to January 2.

Chanukah candles to Light up Historic Downtown Norcross this Holiday Season

Atlanta, GA--  On December 1st, 2010, Chabad of Gwinnett will light the sky of Norcross with a public 10-foot Grand Menorah erected in Historic Downtown Norcross.  Rabbi Yossi Lerman, director of Chabad of Gwinnett, will light the Chanukah candles.  The menorah lighting ceremony will be followed by a celebration with dancing, singing and eating the traditional Chanukah treats of hot latkes and doughnuts. The eight-day Jewish festival of Chanukah begins on Wednesday, December 1 this year, and this event kicks off the community-wide observance. 

Immediately following the Grand Menorah lighting is a Chanukah party at the Iron Horse Tavern in Norcross. This party is for adults in the community.

Kaylin Reque of Suwanee Wins Miss Georgia USA , Kristen Robinson of Stone Mountain Wins Miss GA Teen

Atlanta, GA--  Kaylin Reque, 22, of Suwanee, won Miss Georgia USA this past weekend at the Woodland Performing Arts Center in Cartersville.  Kaylin, a graduate of North Gwinnett High School  proudly represented her home town in the pageant as Miss Suwanee, USA.

The other notable winner was Miss Teen Georgia, which went to the Stone Mountain resident Kristen Robinson.  11Alive News' own, Paul Ossmann was the MC of the large event and was delighted that Ms. Reque won.

Keep America Beautiful(KAB) Celebrates 11/15 as America Recycles Day!

Atlanta,GA--  More than 2,500* local community-based events will be held November 15 this year across the nation. America Recycles Day activities include collection drives, educational presentations, employee awareness events, displays, tours contests and other recycling awareness activities.

Keep America Beautiful is a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments. Visit the Green Products EXPO, in conjunction with One DeKalb Neighborhood Summit, on 11/17

Atlanta, GA--  The Green Commission of DeKalb County and Commissioner Kathie Gannon invite all citizens to join them at a Green Products EXPO, in conjunction with One DeKalb Neighborhood Summit, on Saturday, Nov 13, 2010, 9am – 12:00pm, at Georgia Perimeter College – Clarkston campus.

The Green Expo is an opportunity for DeKalb County residents to learn the latest information about environmentally friendly products and services.  Twenty seven local companies and non-profit organizations that help consumers save energy, conserve natural resources and use recycled materials will demonstrate their products and services. There will also be a document shredder on site for the public.

Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center Hosts a Sustainable Gingerbread House Competition 11/30

Atlanta, GA--  As part of its December Green Holiday Program, the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center (GEHC) will host a Sustainable Gingerbread House Contest and Exhibit. Designers (Kid designers and professionals welcome) will create environmentally-friendly houses out of edible materials that highlight sustainability and green building design. 

At least three sustainable building elements must be included in the design of the gingerbread house, such as solar panels, rain barrels, green roof, windmills, etc. Participants may use a traditional gingerbread recipe, a recipe for dog biscuits, bird seed cakes, or any other edible product. (Suggested recipes can be found on www.gwinnettEHC.org.) The structure can also include birdseed, pinecones, leaves, twigs… anything from nature.
