Dobbins Chapel saved by students and anonymous donor

LILBURN, Ga. -- Hundreds of school children cheer wildly as three retired military men make their way to the stage.

The principal of Saint John Neumann Catholic school says to the assembled crowd, "You've achieved your goal. The chapel has been saved."

The children begin to cheer again.

The Georgia Pest Control Association supports Leukemia & Lymphoma Society event

Ted Veitch, President of the Norcross-based Georgia Pest Control Association (GPCA) announced the tenth annual participation of the organization with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walks. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) relies heavily on funds raised through the GPCA. Since 2004, member companies of the GPCA have raised $876,000 to help fight blood cancers. Their goal is to reach the $1 million mark this year to celebrate their decade of participation with the Light The Night Walks.

“The Georgia Pest Control Association is proud to partner with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through the Light The Night Walk,” said Ted Veitch, the GPCA President. “Light The Night provides a way for our association to work together to raise funds for cancer research and allows us to give back in the communities we serve. I’m excited to announce we raised over $77,000 for LLS in 2012 throughout Georgia.”

Hundreds attend AKA peace rally

ATLANTA -- More than 200 metro Atlanta middle school students attended a peace rally and workshop hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. over the weekend.

The rally was a kickoff for 40 Days of Peace, which begins Monday. 40 Days of Peace is a commitment to kindness and service that encourages young people to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

At Saturday's rally, speakers encouraged attendees to stop bullying and stay out of gangs. Police officers gave a presentation on how to interact with law enforcement.

A concurrent workshop for the parents in attendance focused on implementing strategies to keep children safe and on the right track in life.

FACAA gears up for Georgia Gives Day

ATLANTA -- The Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority (FACAA) recently announced Georgia Gives Day, to take place on Thursday, December 6.

According to the FACAA, Georgia Gives Day gives people across the state an opportunity to donate to their choice of a nonprofit organization, an effort in total to help change the lives of people in need.

Those participating can donate to a cause nearby by searching locations, or to a cause for a special reason, where organizations are listed by category.

Donate candy bars to troops

DULUTH, Ga. -- The Gwinnett County Convention and Visitors Bureau is hosting a candy bar drive to support Hugs for Our Soldiers.

The GCVB will accept donations of full-size candy bars and bags of M&M's through Friday, Dec. 7. No mini candy bars will be accepted.

The person who donates the most candy will win an overnight stay at North Georgia Canopy & Ziplining Tours in Lula, three Adventure Tours and a $75 Visa gift card. The entire prize package is valued at $545.

Volunteer this Thanksgiving

CUMMING, Ga. -- Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away, and we need your help to provide a Thanksgiving feast for children in need and their families. Act Together will host our 3rd Community Thanksgiving dinner. This year, our Thanksgiving dinner will be in the gymnasium at Covenant Christian Academy in Cumming. There is a lot of work that goes into serving Thanksgiving dinner to hundreds of people and we need lots of help to make this happen.

Volunteers are needed to cook turkeys (we will provide the turkey) and bring to our Thanksgiving dinner ready to serve. You do not have to stay but must drop off between 12-2PM on Thanksgiving Day to the Covenant Christian Academy Gymnasium located at 6905 Post Road in Cumming. Contact Us to Sign Up.

50 Ga. schools 'Mix It Up' to promote tolerance

ATLANTA -- Fifty schools in Georgia were represented at this year's Mix It Up at Lunch Day.

The event, which is part of the Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance project, encourages children to step outside their comfort zones and sit with someone new at lunch.

"When people step out of their cliques and get to know someone, they realize just how much they have in common," Teaching Tolerance director Maureen Costello said in a statement. "Mix It Up is a positive step that can help create schools where students see each other as individuals and not just as members of a separate group."

Nearly 3,000 schools across the country took part in Mix It Up at Lunch Day on Oct. 30.
